If the training rigors of the marathon or half-marathon are too much, the ShopRite 5K is an excellent alternative.

Date: Saturday, October 18, 2014

Race Start: 7:20 AM; 1 hour time limit

Start Line: Paca and Pratt Streets

Race Limit: 4,200

Restrictions: No age restrictions for 5K; Must complete course by 9:00 AM

Changes for 2014:

SHOPRITE 5K MEDALS & OTHER IMPROVEMENTS: In 2013, thanks to our wonderful new sponsor ShopRite, we began distributing medals for 5K participants. This makes us one of the only 5k races that honor our runners in this way and we are excited to continue to do so. With our multi-race festival concept and our "City for Everyone. A Race for Everyone". event slogan we want every one of our participants to be able to proudly display a medal that they worked hard to earn.

We will be making additional changes to the 5K including a hard time limit of one-hour to complete the 3.1 mile course. However, we will require walkers who are not at the 3/4 marker at MLK Blvd after 25 minutes to take a shorter route (about 2 miles) to help them attempt to cross the finish line and earn a medal prior to the time limit. This change will allow us the needed time to change our focus toward the Kids Fun Run and other races and address safety concerns with the Wheelchair Marathon participants who often finish by 8:30 am.

Chip Timing  The event will continue to utilize the newest timing technology. The B-tag technology offers runners a more streamlined race experience than the traditional chip system. B-Tags are attached to participant bib and clearly marked with the corresponding bib number. This eliminates the need to scan your chip at the expo.

In addition, runners do not need to return the tag and can dispose of it at their convenience. This means no more sitting down to undo your shoe lace just after your run and it also means you no longer have to worry about the $30 charge for a lost chip.

Tips to have your time accurately recorded:

  • Race bib is clearly visible on the front of the torso
  • Race bib is unaltered and unmodified (Do not fold or wrinkle)
  • Race bib is pinned in all four corners
  • Race bib is not covered (jackets, runner belts, water bottles, etc.)

Packet Pick Up:  All runners are required to pick up their packets at the Health & Fitness Expo on Thursday or Friday prior to race day.  The expo is located in The Baltimor Convention Center Hall G.  for more details, click hereTHERE WILL BE NO RACE DAY PACKET PICK UP.

Gatorade Endurance Formula (Lemon-Lime flavor) will be served at each aid station along the course of this year’s race. Gatorade Endurance Formula is a specialized sports drink that contains approximately twice the amount of sodium (200 mg per 8 ounces) of Gatorade Thirst Quencher, along with chloride, potassium, magnesium and calcium to help sustain hydration by more fully replacing what is lost in sweat.  Gatorade Endurance Formula also contains a 6% carbohydrate solution (14 grams per 8 ounces), just like Gatorade Thirst Quencher, which research shows is optimal to help speed fluid back into the body and fuel working muscles. Gatorade Endurance Formula is available in 34 ounce and 24 ounce sport bottles at major grocery and convenience stores nationwide, and Gatorade Endurance Formula powder is available at specialty athletic stores and at www.gatorade.com/endurance.  For more information about Gatorade Endurance Formula, please visit www.itsonthecourse.com.
