Cancellation Policy
Corrigan Sports wants provide a safe race environment for all participants. Should there be a time that we feel it is unsafe to start a race or proceed with the race, once it has started, the following policy may be enforced;
If weather or other conditions present a danger to participants, we maintain the right to cancel or modify the race. Public safety officials and medical authorities will be consulted prior to any race cancellation or modification.
The two primary influences on the cancellation decision are heat index and severe weather.
Heat Index: High heat and humidity measured in accordance with the American College of Sports Medicine’s recommendations for participation in endurance events could result in cancellation or alteration of the race. The measurement system is based on the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), which is used to determine heat risk to runners. It is calculated by an equation that includes ambient temperature (20%), relative humidity (70%), and radiant heat (10%). The stratification of risk is as follows for runners in shoes, shorts, and a shirt: Here are the ACSM recommendations;
WBGT Range: | Runner Recommendation | Race Recommendation |
Greater than 82F | Do not run | Cancel race |
> 75F to 81F | Slow pace, additional hydrationHeat sensitive should not run | Shorten race / alter course |
Should the race be cancelled or altered after the official start due to a heat emergency, runners are to slow their pace to a walk and proceed to the staging area with caution. Hydration stations will be available along the course, as well as medical personnel. Additional fluids may be available; but it should not be assumed that fluid availability would be limitless, due to logistical constraints.
Severe Weather: Cancellation is strongly advised when severe thunderstorms with the threat of lightning threatens the course and are forecasted to continue throughout the time frame of the event. Alteration of the course or race length may be implemented to ensure a safer race environment.
The above conditions will be recognized as “an act of god”, and will not result in the refunding of race entry fees or future race credits.
Should the municipality, beyond CSE’s control, impact CSE’s ability to conduct the event, the same refund policy will be in effect.
Corrigan Sports asserts that each runner assumes a personal responsibility when entering a running event and accepts the potential risks. Corrigan Sports encourages all runners to take all precautions and cooperate with directives given during the race by event personnel.
Corrigan Sports will not knowingly place the participants in danger and burden the medical support community.
Unfortunately, almost all race related expenses will have been incurred prior to the actual race. Should the race be forced to cancel, the financial impact on the race would not be any different than if the race was held in its entirety. Thus, refunding of entry fees would devastate the financial future of the race.
